By now you've no doubt heard about the devastation in Peru's southern coast region caused by two strong 8.0 earthquakes on Wednesday, August 15. My friends and family are doing okay, but many families are suffering untold losses, and the relief effort will be long and complex. Peru needs your support! My friends at SaludPeru.org have a compilation of responsible sources for your donations. Here are a few to consider:
· UN TECHO PARA MI PAIS: These are a group of young university students
that have already traveled to Pisco and are planning to build 100
emergency houses. Please see their main website for donations
· CARITAS is an organization already working in Peru for many years. They have been in the news helping since the earthquake. Please visit their website www.caritas.org.pe
• OXFAM: Has set up a special fund to channel assistance directly to their on-the-ground efforts in Peru. Oxfam staff in Peru is working to meet immediate needs, like clean water, sanitation, and basic shelter, as well as to assess the damage and plan for long-term recovery, focusing on poor and rural populations that are the most vulnerable and hardest to reach. https://donate.oxfamamerica.org/02/peru_earthquake
If you are in the Bay Area, you can also attend a fundraiser on September 12, 2007.
