Highlights of the week

Ac9 It's Friday, and I am happy to say I had a very art filled week. I am really busy preparing for my Open Studio on October 20th, but it was really nice to get two awards this week. The first was the Alameda County Arts Leadership Award. I was one of 7 recipients. We received awards for outstanding achievements and contributions impacting the arts community and residents of Alameda County.Other honorees were: Gregory Reznick (Pleasanton),  Fernando Hernandez (Hayward), Francisco Zermeno (Hayward), Julie Finegan (Pleasanton), Raymond Patlan (Oakland), and Sally Joan Baker (Berkeley).  It was good to see that a few of the other honorees were Raza. Here are some pics from the event. The one on the left is of myself. The one below is of all the honorees. (click on images to see them in full size)

Then there was Oakland Arts Day today which celebrated all the recipients of the Oakland Individual Artist Grant. My homeboy and artistic collaborator, Jesus Barraza, and I each received an award this year. One of my art teachers, Ruben Guzman (see below), also received an award. Ruben taught me how to do "cartoneria' (Mexican paper mache) back in 1997. He is a good friend and fellow artist. The most fun I had was watching the kids from Prescott Clown Troupe perform. They were soo energetic and totally into their routines, I wish I had done some clown training when I was a kid, I think I would have been a pretty funny clown.
