I will be in Maui in less than two weeks for an artist in residency at the Hui No‘eau Visual Arts Center. My task is to engage Maui-based nonprofit organizations to develop a case study about how artists can collaborate with non-arts community groups to develop messages around social justice on a local scale. I will be hosting a wide range of hands-on activities, including a teen intensive workshops focusing on printmaking and street graphics. All prospective students under the age of 18 are eligible for financial aid to help offset the cost of tuition and enable access to the broadest possible range of interested young artists. Also participating in this project is is NJ-based artist, Orlando Reyes, founding Director of the critically acclaimed Jersey City-based 58 Gallery.
"I feel a strong responsibility to make art that will help others help our planet,” I stated in the press release, “Maui is a special place for me. I hope that through my visit, I inspire others to be agents for social justice, because it is the unique collaborations between artists, organizations, and people that will forge true social change."
The visual arts provide a powerful vehicle for communication and a medium for cultural enlightenment; as an educational resource specializing in the visual arts, Hui No‘eau consistently seeks individuals that can handle the challenge of translating complex ideas or issues into imagery, thus allowing a broad constituency to form their own ideas about what they are seeing and how it can or should be defined.
