Avenida del Sol, Cuzco, Peru

November 07, 2005

This photo represents the brutality of the Spaniards as they conquered the Incas through exploitation and genocide. The left shows a torture device used in the Spanish inquisition. Notice the machine is being operated by an indigenous man, who is being ordered by a man in a black hood. Tis machine was a table with sharp metallic needles protruding from the surface. As the victim's arms and legs were pulled apart, the needles began to tear at the victim's back and waist. Behind the hooded man, you see a body hung by its feet. The right side shows a man of color beating another man of color, as the Spaniard yells orders. A woman is throwing her hands up in anguish.
